Excellence!
The Wake County community has adopted the Board of Education's Goal that by 2003, 95% of students tested will score at or above grade level as measured by North Carolina End-of-Grade testing in grades 3 and 8. In pursuit of this goal, we will:
  • Attract and retain a high quality workforce (including compensation that is market-sensitive and individually responsive)
  • Ensure safe, inviting, optimal learning environments
  • Provide comprehensive instruction technology
  • Seek and secure sufficient funding
Tutors needed for Goal 2003

Two thousand community reading tutors are needed to assist the Wake County Public School System with its new Accelerated Learning Program (ALP). ALP provides extra time on task to students who currently test below grade level on North Carolina End-of-Grade tests. This work with students takes place outside the school day: before school, after school, Saturdays, and for year-round schools, between sessions.

Reading tutors will receive four hours of initial training and will serve twenty hours thoughout the school year. The tutoring effort is in response to a community-identified priority to support the school system's effort to reach Goal 2003.
